The resolution to this issue is using a little known server trick called domain forwarding. You may have heard of this and just never known what it was or what it did. There are many different things you can do with a domain name. You can point it to name servers for hosting it yourself, you can park it and try to collect some revenue from ads or in this case you can forward your name to the affiliate link you are trying to promote. This action can be done by going into your registrar and setting up a domain forward. Most registrars will also allow you to mask the domain too.

This allows you to forward something like www.buycoolstuff.com to www.coolstuffsite.com/members/?aff_id=953 and when a visitor goes to your link they see the content delivered from the long address, but they will only see your short address in the address bar of their browser.
