Well everybody wants to get their web site or blog listed in as many free directories as possible.  This is great, but what most webmasters are not thinking about is quality.  The only value a web directory can offer is quality listings and some page rank on the directory that you are to be listed on.  If you use free directories you may be able to get your link on a page that has some PR, but this is not everything.  You need to be aware that free directories do not have the motivation to keep the structure of their site up to date and remove dead links from their listings.

If Google finds you link on a page that has good page rank, but your link is surrounded by dead links, this will not look very appetizing to Google.  You need to understand that the quality of the directory is “as” important if not more important than the PR of it’s pages.   This is why in many cases the most valuable directory listings to get involved with are not free.  The money spent is many times turned over to those who keep the directory up to date and continue site maintenance to assure that each and every link on the directory site is active and accurate.  Just like anything else, you really do get what you pay for when it comes to buying a spot on a top website directory.
